In Carpinteria, CA today it feels about as far from winter as a sunny summer day. That's definitely not the case in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Today marks the start of Surfline's forecast watch on the Cold War surf contest out at the boardwalk there. 2 teams made up of 16 pro surfers from New York and New Jersey will be competing in a contest there sometime over the next few weeks (when the waves are best). We're stoked to be sponsoring the teams with our Homespun French Terry Sweatshirts…to help fight off a bit of the cold after getting out of the water.
The surfing world finally knows what Jersey surfers have known all along: our winter waves are world class. Surfing in New Jersey with water temperatures that hover in the hight 30's to low 40's, produces the necessary power for the elusive "Jersey Juice" fast, heavy and hollow waves that are not for the faint of heart. A hand picked group of professional surfers from New Jersey and New York are out to prove they are tougher than the rest, and have signed on to compete in a winter surfing contest at Asbury Park called, THE COLD WAR.
Eighteen professional surfers from New Jersey and New York will be divided into two teams with the winning team taking home the ice cold cash. THE COLD WAR will take place in the frigid waters off Asbury Park, with a waiting period beginning February 27 to March 19.
The call to hold the contest will be made at least 48 hours in advance to when the conditions are predicted to be optimal.
On February 27th the COLD WAR LAUNCH PARTY, in conjunction with the New Jersey Surfing Hall of Fame, will feature an official 50th Anniversary screening and exhibit of The Endless Summer at the Paramount Theater. The exhibit runs until March 18th, the end of the COLD WAR waiting period.
